David’s Hope Evo Pro 2 29er wheelset

David asked for a pimp wheelset to match his blue/white/black Trek/Gary Fisher 29er mountain bike. He wanted a light, sturdy wheelset for cross country racing.  David’s a repeat customer of Zed Wheels, with previous purchase of our wheelset cyclocross racing. After a bit of emails back and forth, David went with this sweet and affordable custom wheelset.

  • KinLin Niobium alloy XR-230  29″ (700C) rims, 32 hole, 470g with eyelets.
  • Hope Evo Pro 2 mountain bike hub set, QR front/rear. Blue
  • Sapim Race butted spokes, black.
  • Sapim alloy nipples, 14mm, blue.
  • Wheelset weight: 1870g (excluding skewers)

The first race for David on these wheels was 2nd place in his category. Congrats, David!

Eric’s Custom Diablo SL

Eric was one of my first customers on the Zed Wheels new online shopping site. He went through the made-to-order choices for a customized, and at the moment one of a kind Diablo SL wheelset. Red hubs isn’t unique, but laced with silver nipples and classic stainless silver spokes made these wheels really pop! They look so much more expensive than $479. At an honest 1421grams, these are nice and light too!

Robert’s Alchemy ORC/XR-380 wheel

Robert, a triathlete, wanted a beefy and aero rear wheel. He’s a solid guy, does triathlons. After a back and forth consultation over emails, we landed on this build. It didn’t take long to choose the Alchemy ORC rear hub, arguably the stiffest rear hub on the market with it’s oversize axle, large bearings, 5th bearing pressed in over the freehub, and optimal geometry. In a deep rim and in alloy, instead of the more costly carbon, the KinLin XR-380 is the deepest it gets. Deep here means a bit heavier, but for Robert the depth adds strength as well, and that’s what he was looking for over lightweight. Laced with Wheelsmith DB-14 butted spokes all around, this wheel ought to fair well for Robert’s season of triathlon competitions.

Ryan’s team wheelset

Ryan, just spent several months traveling and when he got back, well, the wallet wasn’t quite as thick as it had been. Still, as a member of the Zed Wheels’ sponsored Pro City Racing road team, Ryan wanted a sweet wheelset for race season. He chose a pimped version of the popular Diablo SL. He upgraded to red Tune Mag 170 rear hub (174g) paired to an Alchemy ELF (64g) front hub. These fantastic hubs are then laced to XR-270 rims with Sapim CX-Ray spokes with red Sapim 14mm alloy nipples. The wheelset comes in at 1365 grams. A great price to weight ratio.

John’s custom C-4 wheelset

John wanted a nice race wheelset for his Kuota road bike. He was looking for something reasonably light, good quality and strong. After discussing his needs, we landed on this sweet 1430g wheelset. A 30mm niobium alloy rim rear, 27mm deep niobium alloy front. C-4 satin black hubs, made in the usa, laced with Sapim Lasers front radially, and Wheelsmith DB-14 2.0/1.7/2.0 drive-size  2-cross with Lasers non-drive, again 2x.

The red nipples will tie into his black/white/red Kuota.

If you’d like a wheelset like this one, head over to the Custom Wheels section, start with the KinLin rims to build up the front and rear wheels.
